Steve Isoye

Steven Isoye is a retired educator. He served as a science teacher, department chair, principal, and superintendent during his career. Throughout his career and in his schools, he has supported student travel, which he sees as an incredible opportunity for students to broaden their sense of the people and cultures that make up this world. Steven played the clarinet in band from 5th grade through his senior year of high school and in a university band.

My Favorite Ambassadors Memory

Every concert! I smile with joy as I see the excitement of every musician playing/singing overseas for the first time.

Window or aisle?

Window seat – I want to see the world, especially at 30,000 ft!

One Thing I Never Travel Without

A pocket notebook and pen. I use this to keep track of what I experience: sights, food, or simply to document the feeling.

Scott Schlup

London is one of Scott’s favorite cities in Europe and he is so happy to bring the majesty and charm of London to our Ambassadors of Music travelers!

Scott retired from teaching band in Colorado after 32 years.  During that time, he fell in love with international travel, teaching at various summer music camps in Germany and Lebanon.  Scott also had the opportunity to travel with the Colorado Ambassadors of Music for six tours, so he is very familiar with the experiences our Ambassadors will enjoy along their journey.

In retirement, Scott is Co-chair of the Colorado All-State High School Band, conducts the Loveland Concert Band and performs in the Exquisite Brass Quintet and the Fort Collins Wind Symphony.  Scott serves as a mentor to band directors around the state, and is a consultant with the Poudre School District (Fort Collins, CO).

My Favorite Ambassadors Memory

Being from Colorado, there is nothing better than pulling into Crans Montana. With a love of the mountains and the resort towns of the Rockies, Switzerland feels just like home – only better. Amazing food, fun and one of the best concert audiences on the planet – I’m sure our Ambassadors will also fall in love with this amazing town.

Window or aisle?

Aisle – easier to stand and stretch on those long flights.

One Thing I Never Travel Without

My camera – I love photography and sharing my experiences with friends and family.

Mauro Chiummo

I love traveling, meeting new people, and learning about the local culture and what makes people so special and different.  I was born in Palermo in Sicily, and grew up in a typical Italian family with my parents and my brother.  I got my diploma in Chemistry and after a couple of attempts at the local university in Palermo, I realized that something different was waiting for me.

I have spent a good part of my life exploring and working outdoors as an Environmental Trainer since 2000, meeting groups of kids, teachers, scholars and public authorities. It was one of the most exciting moments in my life.  I was able to meet new people and discover a very good part of Europe.

I live in Palermo with my family: Daniela (my wife), Mariapaola (my daughter), 3 dogs (all female), 2 goldfishes (not sure what gender they are!) and a dove (another girl!).

Luciano Cricco

Hi! I’m Luciano, but you can call me Luci. I am originally from Argentina but I’ve been living abroad for the past 5 years. I come from a family of tour guides and the land of dinosaurs. I’ve worked on AOM three times and I’ve loved it a bit more each time!

My Favorite Ambassadors Memory

My favorite AOM moment was definitely standing in front of a clear and perfect view of the Matterhorn. I studied Geography at university so the Swiss Alps were definitely the highlight of my experiences.

One Thing I Never Travel Without

A powerful external battery. Taking pictures during my trips drains my phone like crazy so this is what keeps me going!

Laura Bonizzato

My name is Laura Bonizzato, and I live near Verona, Italy. I have been a certified tour leader and manager since 2012. In addition to Italian, I speak English, German, and Spanish fluently. Furthermore, I have lived abroad in Germany, Spain, England, and Ireland.

My greatest passion is traveling — discovering new places and experiencing the excitement of a new landscape, a new dish, or a different culture. I have many years of experience in travel planning and tour management, and I have led, and continue to lead, trips for various tour operators and travel agencies throughout Italy, Europe, and worldwide. I am organized, hardworking, efficient, passionate, detail-oriented, approachable, and communicative. I love helping people find their way, grow through new experiences, and create unforgettable memories.

With a background in Art History, combined with my passion for homemade food, local culture, and storytelling, let me take you on a once-in-a-lifetime journey filled with magical memories and unforgettable adventures.

My Favorite Ambassadors Memory

I would say meeting all of you in London upon your arrival and seeing your tired but excited faces — or, as an art lover, discovering the different styles of European architecture together. But if I’m honest, the most special moment is the final concert in Bad Hofgastein, when you are no longer just travel companions, but we have become friends for life. It is always such a touching and emotional moment!

One Thing I Never Travel Without

As a huge tea lover (even though I’m Italian!), my lemon and ginger infusion. After a long day, I enjoy taking a peaceful moment for myself before planning and reviewing the details of the next day.

France

Joseph Mican

Joseph is a veteran tour director and has spent the last sixteen years either leading tours throughout the USA or doing seasonal work for the National Science Foundation at one of the United States’ three Antarctic research bases.

He earned his Master’s degree in musicology, writing his thesis on the music in “Close Encounters of the Third Kind.” While in college, Joseph spent a semester studying in Paris and living with a French family, and in 2014, he walked the French leg of the Camino de Santiago from Le Puy to the Spanish border.

He is excited to be sharing his love of all things music and French as part of the Ambassadors of Music program.

One Thing I Never Travel Without

noise-canceling earbuds because they make the most loud and stressful places feel so much quieter and calmer.

Mario Fancavilla

I love being a Tour Manager. For the past 10 years, I’ve been traveling around Europe with visitors from all over the world, showing them just how much there is to discover around us.

For me, this job means combining my passion for travel and culture with what I do best: managing, organizing, and communicating. The goal is to ensure that every trip becomes a memorable experience for each guest—one they can’t wait to repeat.

But that’s not all. I work with the desire to share my passion with those around me, hoping to inspire everyone to travel and to always be curious—always eager to meet different people and discover languages, landscapes, cuisines, cultures, and so much more. What would life be without curiosity?!

My Favorite Ambassadors Memory

During my first trip, with the huge group from Illinois, when over 400 of us, spread out on a large meadow in Zermatt, Switzerland, managed to take a photo perfectly mirroring the Matterhorn, as if we too were a mountain—but upside down.

One Thing I Never Travel Without

My books to study and learn about the places I’m visiting, my smartphone to take beautiful photos to share in real time and then save in my digital albums, and my swimsuit. You never really know when the moment for a nice dip will come! Even if it’s in the Seine.

Craig Theis

Dr. Craig R. Theis completed the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Instrumental Conducting from the University of Missouri at Kansas City Conservatory of Music in 2000. Dr. Theis has also earned degrees from Indiana University and the University of Texas at Austin.

He has over 40 years of teaching experience as a band, vocal and orchestra conductor, most recently in New Orleans, Louisiana. Since 2023, Dr. Theis has been the Paris Coordinator for Ambassadors of Music.

My Favorite Ambassadors Memory

Wheeling a pallet of bottled water with a dolly jack down the streets of Paris at 1am for our AOM Novotel guests. Second memorable moment is seeing the choir students’ eyes widen when they hear their first chord in the acoustic setting of Eglise de la Madeleine.

Nadia Lugeni

Hi, I’m Nadia! I’m a tour leader from Vicenza, a small city near Venice, Italy.

For the past seven years, I have been traveling around the world discovering natural beauty, local cultures, and the unique traditions that make every place special, while learning to speak four languages. For the last four years, I have accompanied groups on many kinds of travel experiences: from breathtaking natural landscapes and the most beautiful monuments and works of art, to discovering local cultures and traditions, as well as accompanying musical groups on their concert journeys across Europe.

More recently, I discovered bicycle travel: an experience that challenges both body and mind, but also reminds me that the most demanding journeys are often the most rewarding.

I care deeply about creating a united and positive group atmosphere, because I believe that a big part of every travel experience comes from the people you meet and the moments you share together along the way.

My Favorite Ambassadors Memory

Arrival in Crans-Montana. I love the transition from lively cities like London and Paris to the calm and beauty of the Swiss landscape. After the intensity of the city, the group naturally slows down, relaxes, and starts to connect more deeply, as real bonds begin to form through shared experiences.

One Thing I Never Travel Without

My self-made natural soaps and cosmetics. I like taking care of my body and the environment wherever I am in the world, and it makes me feel good because it feels like my small contribution to doing things in a more mindful way.

Switzerland

Lori Hutton

Lori’s love of music and travel has been an important part of her career. She recently retired from Drury University as the Chair of the Performing Arts Department and Director of Jazz Studies, after 25 years as Director of Bands.

She’s been honored with awards including Teacher of the Year, 50 Directors Who Make a Difference National Award, and the Missouri Association of Jazz Educators Outstanding Jazz Educator of the Year.

Her journey in music education has taken her far beyond the classroom. She’s been part of the Ambassadors of Music program since 1990, when she first experienced Europe as a staff member, and later as Missouri Jazz Band Director, sharing music and unforgettable experiences with students across countries and cultures. In 2023, her journey came full circle when she became AOM City Coordinator in Switzerland.

Lori’s love of making connections and building relationships are an important part of her work and life.

My Favorite Ambassadors Memory

Sharing the beauty of the Swiss Alps with the students and sharing the student’s music with our Swiss community.

One Thing I Never Travel Without

Curiosity for the world and kindness for the people in it.

Marvin & Mary Ann Manring

Mary Anne and Marvin Manring’s life together stretches back to 1981, where they met as college band mates. Their collegiate music travels included a Washington, D.C. trip for the 1985 Presidential Inauguration.

After college, they taught in public schools for a combined total of 70 years – Marvin as a band & choir director and Mary Anne as an upper elementary/middle school math teacher. Their travels have taken them to dozens of destinations in North and Central America, the British Isles, Greece, and continental Europe, often with (or thanks to) their children Liz and Lucas and their families.

Mary Anne and Marvin stay busy with local civic clubs and activities, the music ministry of their church, and as many rounds of golf as possible. Mary Anne relaxes with weekly games of pickleball and Mahjong. Marvin remains active in the music profession as historian with the state music educators’ association and a trustee and clinician/conductor for the Windjammers Unlimited circus band music preservation society.

My Favorite Ambassadors Memory

Even though we see the Matterhorn several times during the summer, it always feels like the first time.

Window or aisle?

Mary Anne says, “aisle seat on a plane, window seat on a bus.” Marvin says, “window seat, every time.”

One Thing I Never Travel Without

We hate to admit that we probably wouldn’t travel without our phones…maybe because nowadays, you can get pretty much everything else with one.

John was a frequent staff member of the Missouri Ambassadors of Music during his public-school teaching career and has been a City Coordinator for the Ambassadors of Music program in Rothenburg for 8 years.

My Favorite Ambassadors Memory

Rothenburg, of course! I have the privilege of helping AOM groups discover a real Medieval European town, help them organize performances, and watch the positive responses received from audiences filled with local patrons.

My own personal memorable tour experience was my first AOM tour with Missouri. My first travel abroad…I t was a life-changing event and convinced me to take my own high school band to Europe the following year so my students could share in a similar experience together!

My Favorite Ambassadors Memory

I love seeing the students experience Europe for the first time! I also love seeing the students and staff interact at the Farewell dinner in Bad Hofgastein. The AOM groups create such a bond throughout the tour and it’s neat to showcase that with great food and a spectacular local band!
