April is here and this month’s post brings us that much closer to departure day!
So far, we’ve talked travel documents, packing strategy, backpack business and more. Countdown mode is ON!
But first things first…
You have your passport already, right?
Hopefully that beautiful piece of documentation has arrived at your house and is just waiting to be tucked away in a lanyard-style holder. Or perhaps your passport is in process, getting final touches from the Department of State and nearly bound for your mailbox.
If you haven’t applied for your passport, please do so immediately. At this point, the “expedited” or “urgent” options will be a necessity to give yourself the best chance of receiving your passport before your tour departs.
As a reminder, your passport must be valid for at least six months after your return date.
And, If you haven’t read through our guidance on securing your UK Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA). stop what you’re doing and take care of that ASAP.
Beyond passports and ETAs, we still have plenty of time to get ready for departure day. So, let’s get to it!
Money Matters
Learning how to navigate different currencies is such an important skill. In our travels, you’ll spend British pounds, Swiss francs and euros when you’re buying snacks and souvenirs along the way.
Before the trip, discuss with your parents how you’d like to pay for things while on tour. The safest and easiest option is using Apple Pay or Google Pay through your phone, as both options are available nearly everywhere.
If you’d rather bring a pre-loaded card, like Mastercard or Visa, that’s a great choice, too. These cards are easy to cancel if lost or stolen and your parents can add funds if they choose to. Want a few pounds or euros to bring home as a souvenir? Don’t forget to hit the ATM for local currency.
International Phone Plans
Your family back home will absolutely want to hear your voice a time or two! And you’ll want to use apps to navigate new cities during planned free time and to pass the time during bus rides. So we strongly encourage you to add an international plan to your phone for your AOM adventure.
Most cell-phone providers offer international plans that allow you to use your phone just like you would in the States. Daily and monthly pricing options are usually available. Contact your cell-phone provider for more details and make sure it’s activated before you board your flight overseas, which will help you to avoid expensive charges while on the road.
Pre-Tour Camp
If you think you’re excited about the tour now, just wait until you’re snapping selfies with your new friends at your state’s pre-tour camp! Meeting your fellow Ambassadors, getting to know new directors and learning new music is the perfect kickoff to your tour experience, so make sure those dates are written in Sharpie on your calendar.
We’ll see you right back here next month with our final countdown post, a few last pre-trip recommendations and some important reminders. Don’t miss it!
